Spitalfields Festival

Summer 2005

The images seen here were made by Daniella Maller and Teresa di Fiore who worked together photographing Dennis Severs’ House, 18 Folgate Street, London E1. The Grade 11 listed house dates from 1724. From 1979 to 1999 it was occupied by Dennis Severs who gradually recreated the ten rooms in different styles to reconstruct the lives of the former occupants from the Huguenot silk weavers, who had originally lived there, to subsequent generations. Severs has recreated the house as if each of the occupants had just left and the installation includes half eaten loaves and a range of smells. It is now run by the Spitalfields Historic Buildings Trust.
